What is Dragonfly?

Dragonflies are animals that belong to the Anisoptera suborder. Dragonflies have wings that are 2-5 inches long. Meanwhile, their body length is 3 inches. The unique thing about dragonflies is their two large eyes and transparent wings. These two features help dragonflies to adapt.

Dragonflies grow very quickly, so they can eat large portions. Dragonflies eat insect larvae, worms, and other dragonfly nymphs. Dragonflies live everywhere, especially in tropical areas. To live, dragonflies need water because dragonfly nymphs need water to stay alive.

Now, let's understand the parts of the dragonfly's body!

  • Eyes: Dragonfly eyes are large. Dragonfly eyes are made of components called ommatidia or photoreceptor cells. The function of the photoreceptors is to perfect the image. With the shape of the large eyes, dragonflies have the ability of a wide field of vision which allows dragonflies to see objects 360 degrees around them.
  • Wings: To catch prey flexibly, dragonflies use four wings. Dragonfly wings look beautiful because there are multiple layers on the wings. The color of dragonfly wings comes from wax crystals that form on multiple layers (cuticle).
  • Body: Dragonflies have long bodies. The longest dragonfly in the world measures 72 cm!

Dragonflies come from eggs that develop into larvae. Then, the larvae undergo their final molt and eventually become adult dragonflies. When studying dragonflies, it is also important to understand the dragonfly life cycle.

What is the Pattern of Dragonfly?

The dragonfly pattern is a head with two large eyes, a long body, and four wings. Dragonfly wings have different patterns. The pattern is like a fingerprint, a pair of wings has a unique pattern.

The wing pattern comes from the network in the secondary veins that intersect each other to form thousands of small patterns that look simple. The unlimited variation makes the dragonfly wing pattern so unique.

Then, why do dragonfly wing patterns look like glass? That's because dragonfly wings contain a thin, shiny layer of chitin. Chitin is flexible, strong, and can be penetrated by light. That's what makes dragonfly wings look like glass and can reflect light.
